Wild Night In The Midwest

It was a wild night tuesday night for severe weather. At one point there were no fewer than 15 tornado warnings in effect.

Tornadoes were reported in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and in Missouri north of St Louis. A tornado has reportedly struck the town of Edinburgh, Indiana. Damage reports are just beginning to filter in.

The local fire department reported a tornado on the ground in town with debris in the air and transformers blowing out at about 8:45 PM CDT.

Another intense area of rotation crossed very near Morgantown Ohio. Right now there are no damage reports coming out of that particular city.

If you look at the images below you'll be able to see not only the strong rotation as evidenced by the reds and greens tightly packed together, but a hook echo in the reflectivity image. That hook echo is caused by winds being pulled into the rotation -- in this case -- from the south.

Elsewhere across the midwest, there were multiple rpeorts of funnel clouds and tornados near -- and north of -- St Louis Missouri. Law enforcement reported a tornado in the town of Whiteside Missouri at about 9:00 PM CDT. Once again, there are no reports of damage coming out of the area yet.

Even at this late hour there are still reports of funnel clouds coming in out of Cherokee county Kansas just east of Oswego. That storm has caused a great deal of wind damage with ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System)wind gust readings of 60-70 MPH.

There have been many areas -- that while not tornado warned -- saw severe weather tonight. I'm sure that we'll probably see some wind damage and hail reports coming in out of those areas over the next 24 hours as well.
