Because of wind and some last-minute issues, the radome was not lifted until around 3:30 PM this afternoon.

The new radome is now in place and bolted down.

The new antenna/dish has been hoisted into place at the top of the pedestal at the Huron Regional Airport. Technicians spent the day fastening the dish to the mechanism that tilts the dish up and down to get radar data at different levels in the atmosphere.

The new radome will be lifted first thing tomorrow morning and set down on the pedestal to enclose the new Doppler antenna.

The old doppler ball (radome) has been "sliced" in half and the top lowered to the ground. The old antenna dish has been removed as well.

The new antenna has been assembled, and crews are working on the new radome which should be hoisted into place some time on Wednesday.

This is exciting new Dual-Polarimetric radar technology that will benefit the residents of South Dakota.

Phased array

That is good. We can use all the new radar we can get. I sat thru a presentation and demo of the new Phased Array Radar they are testing at the NSSL in Norman, OK. You wouldn't believe the additional radar data you can see and a full scan in about 55 seconds, all 12 tilts. Now that was cool to see. It is all based off the military radar they have been using on navy ships.

Phased Array

Not phased array, but it IS "Dual Polarity", sending out radar waves vertically AND horizontally. This will allow the meteorologists to determine exactly what type of precipitation is falling. It's also 1-Million watts! If there are multiple lines of storms marching across the area, the new Doppler will be able to blast through the first line to see what's going on behind it.

Too bad they are not

Too bad they are not replacing it with Phased Array radar. That would be sweet to have that in our area but for now its only in Norman, OK in testing.
